What is Cambridge International AS & A Level Chemistry (9701)?

Cambridge International AS & A Level Chemistry (9701) has 37 syllabus topics across physical, inorganic and organic chemistry and analysis, assessed through five papers. AS Level is the first half of the course and covers topics 1 to 22. The full A Level adds topics 23 to 37 and two more papers. It is for students who have finished IGCSE or O Level Chemistry and want a base for university chemistry or a related subject. We teach it online, one to one, for students across Saudi Arabia.

AS Level Chemistry Support

For students taking AS Level only, or AS in Year 1 of a two-year A Level. They study topics 1 to 22 and sit Papers 1, 2 and 3 in the same exam series, with grades a to e. We concentrate on moles, bonding, energetics, equilibria, kinetics and early organic topics, because the A Level builds on them.

Full A Level Chemistry Support

For students going on to the full A Level, over two years with the AS result carried forward, or in one series. Grades run from A* to E. Year 2 adds topics 23 to 37, including entropy, transition elements, arenes, amides and NMR.

Cambridge Chemistry (9701) Papers and Routes

Five papers, combined into three routes.

Cambridge assesses 9701 with five papers.

  • Paper 1 Multiple Choice: 1 hour 15 minutes, 40 marks, 40 questions on AS content
  • Paper 2 AS Level Structured Questions: 1 hour 15 minutes, 60 marks
  • Paper 3 Advanced Practical Skills: 2 hours, 40 marks, a timetabled lab-based practical test
  • Paper 4 A Level Structured Questions: 2 hours, 100 marks, A Level content plus AS knowledge
  • Paper 5 Planning, Analysis and Evaluation: 1 hour 15 minutes, 30 marks, a written paper

AS Level is Papers 1, 2 and 3. A Level is all five, in one series or staged over two years. Exams run in June and November, and in March for schools in India.

Students do Paper 3 practical work in their school lab. TutorDock teaches online and does not run lab practicals. Our lessons cover the written skills behind Papers 3 and 5: tables, graphs, significant figures, and evaluating methods and errors.

Cambridge does not publish a list of difficult topics, so this is general advice, not an official ranking: topics that mix calculation with multi-step reasoning, such as equilibria, energetics, electrochemistry, kinetics and organic synthesis, usually need the most practice.

Cambridge recommends IGCSE or O Level Chemistry (or equivalent Co-ordinated Science) before 9701. For that stage, see our Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620) page. New to 9701? Read our complete guide to the papers, topics and how to prepare. See also our A Level Chemistry tutor in Saudi Arabia page.

Our Teaching Approach

One-to-One Online Tutoring

Every lesson is one to one and planned around the student's route: AS only, staged A Level or full A Level. We first find which AS topics are not yet secure, because Paper 4 also expects AS knowledge. Book a free trial class and tell us your route and the topic you need most.

Assignments & Detailed Feedback

Practice mixes multiple-choice, structured calculations and written explanations. Feedback focuses on units, significant figures (the same as, or one more than, the least precise data), showing every stage of working, and command words such as explain and deduce.

Mock Exams & Past Paper Practice

Timed practice matches each paper, from the 1 hour 15 minute Papers 1, 2 and 5 to the 2 hour Paper 4. Students also learn to use the Qualitative analysis notes printed in Paper 3 and to present data and observations clearly.

Topics Covered

Our Cambridge AS & A Level Chemistry (9701) tutoring covers all 37 syllabus topics: 1 to 22 for AS Level, with 23 to 37 added for the full A Level.

Physical Chemistry
  • Atoms, moles and bonding: atomic structure, reacting masses, chemical bonding and states of matter (topics 1 to 4)
