What is Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580)?

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is a tiered qualification: students study either the Core content, aimed at grades C to G, or the Extended content, aimed at grades A* to C. Both cover the same nine topics and finish with two written papers, one without a calculator and one with, each worth 50%. There is no coursework. Our lessons are online and strictly one to one, for families across Saudi Arabia, and we work at whichever tier the school has entered the student for.

Core Level

Core students sit Paper 1 (no calculator) and Paper 3 (calculator), each 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, and are eligible for grades C to G. We build secure number, algebra and geometry habits and clear written working.

Extended Level

Extended students sit Paper 2 (no calculator) and Paper 4 (calculator), each 2 hours and 100 marks, and are eligible for grades A* to E. They study all of Core plus extra content, so much lesson time goes to multi-step problems.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) Papers and Assessment

Two papers per tier, one without a calculator and one with, each worth 50%.

Every candidate takes two written papers, set and marked by Cambridge. Core candidates take Papers 1 and 3, and Extended candidates take Papers 2 and 4. Every question must be answered, and each paper mixes structured and unstructured questions.

  • Paper 1 (Core, no calculator): 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, 50%
  • Paper 3 (Core, calculator): 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, 50%
  • Paper 2 (Extended, no calculator): 2 hours, 100 marks, 50%
  • Paper 4 (Extended, calculator): 2 hours, 100 marks, 50%

Cambridge says Core is for candidates expected to achieve grade D or below, and Extended for those expected to achieve grade C or above. Core entries are eligible for grades C to G and Extended entries for A* to E. Exams run in the June and November series, so ask the school which tier and series applies.

There are two assessment objectives: AO1, knowledge and techniques, and AO2, analysing, interpreting and communicating mathematically. AO2 carries 30–40% of each Core paper and 50–60% of each Extended paper.

Students need a scientific calculator for Papers 3 and 4, and algebraic or graphical calculators are not permitted. They also bring compasses, a protractor and a ruler. A List of formulas is printed on page 2 of every paper, but it is short: mainly area, circumference and volume formulas, plus, for Extended, the quadratic formula, the sine and cosine rules and ½ab sin C. Pythagoras’ theorem and the trigonometric ratios are not on it and must be remembered. In the calculator papers, non-exact answers are expected to 3 significant figures (1 decimal place for angles in degrees), using π from the calculator or 3.142.

Cambridge also offers Cambridge IGCSE (9–1) Mathematics (0980), a separate qualification with the same content and method of assessment but graded 9 to 1. A student cannot be entered for both in the same series, so check which code the school uses. Our maths tutor in Saudi Arabia page explains how our lessons work for families here.

Our Teaching Approach

One-to-One Online Tutoring

Lessons follow the 0580 content at the student’s tier and in the school’s order. Non-calculator skills are practised separately from calculator work, because Papers 1 and 2 do not allow a calculator at all.

Assignments & Detailed Feedback

Practice sets match the topic being taught, and answers are checked line by line. Feedback names the habit that cost marks, such as rounding too early, sign errors or missing working.

Mock Exams & Past Paper Practice

Timed practice follows the real format: 1 hour 30 minutes for 80 marks (Papers 1 and 3) or 2 hours for 100 marks (Papers 2 and 4), about 1.1 to 1.2 minutes per mark. Each paper is reviewed question by question afterwards.
