- About Cambridge Mathematics
What is Cambridge Mathematics (9709)?
Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics (9709) is made up of six papers: three in Pure Mathematics, one in Mechanics and two in Probability & Statistics. Students build skills in algebra, calculus, trigonometry, vectors and complex numbers, and apply them to forces and motion, probability distributions and hypothesis testing. The course can be taken as an AS Level or a full A Level.
Cambridge recommends that students start 9709 after Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (Extended) or O Level Mathematics. Students in Saudi Arabia and other countries often take it for degrees in engineering, economics, business, computer science, finance and other quantitative fields. It is also the foundation for Cambridge AS & A Level Further Mathematics (9231).
Strong Mathematical Foundation
Paper 1 Pure Mathematics 1 is compulsory for every route and underpins all other papers, from quadratics, functions and trigonometry to differentiation and integration.
University Pathway Support
Paper 3 Pure Mathematics 3 adds logarithms, numerical methods, vectors, differential equations and complex numbers, which are key preparation for Further Mathematics and for mathematically demanding degrees.

Cambridge Mathematics (9709) Papers and Routes
Six written papers, combined into AS Level or A Level routes.
Every route starts with Paper 1. Candidates take two papers for AS Level and four papers for A Level.
- Paper 1 Pure Mathematics 1: 1 hour 50 minutes, 75 marks (compulsory)
- Paper 2 Pure Mathematics 2: 1 hour 15 minutes, 50 marks (AS Level only)
- Paper 3 Pure Mathematics 3: 1 hour 50 minutes, 75 marks (A Level only, compulsory)
- Paper 4 Mechanics: 1 hour 15 minutes, 50 marks
- Paper 5 Probability & Statistics 1: 1 hour 15 minutes, 50 marks
- Paper 6 Probability & Statistics 2: 1 hour 15 minutes, 50 marks (A Level only)
AS Level is Paper 1 with Paper 2, 4 or 5. The Paper 1 and 2 route cannot be carried forward to A Level. A Level is Papers 1, 3, 4 and 5, or Papers 1, 3, 5 and 6. Paper 4 and Paper 6 cannot be combined.
Our Approach to Teaching Cambridge Mathematics (9709)
Our teaching approach is designed to make Cambridge Mathematics easier to understand, more manageable, and more results-focused for students in Saudi Arabia.
One-to-One Online Tutoring
Lessons are planned around the student's 9709 route, whether Pure only, Pure with Mechanics, or Pure with Probability & Statistics. We secure Paper 1 algebra and calculus first, because every other paper builds on it.
Assignments & Detailed Feedback
Practice work covers structured, multi-part questions in the Cambridge style. Feedback focuses on clear working, answers to three significant figures, correct use of the MF19 formula list and command words such as "show that" and "verify".
Mock Exams & Past Paper Practice
Students practise timed past papers for their chosen papers: 1 hour 50 minutes for Papers 1 and 3, and 1 hour 15 minutes for Papers 2, 4, 5 and 6. Exams run in the June and November series, and in March for schools in India.

Frequently Asked Questions
All papers are written exams. Papers 1 and 3 are 1 hour 50 minutes and 75 marks, worth 30% of the A Level each. Papers 4, 5 and 6 are 1 hour 15 minutes and 50 marks, worth 20% each. At AS Level, Paper 1 is worth 60% and the second paper 40%.
AS Level is two papers: Paper 1 with Paper 2, Paper 4 or Paper 5. A Level is four papers: Papers 1 and 3 with either Papers 4 and 5 or Papers 5 and 6. AS candidates can get grades a to e, and A Level candidates A* to E.
Yes. Students can take Paper 1 with Paper 4 or Paper 5 for AS Level in one series, carry the result forward (subject to Cambridge's carry-forward rules), and complete the A Level later with Paper 3 and a second applied paper. The Pure Mathematics only route (Papers 1 and 2) is for AS Level only and cannot be carried forward.
Students are expected to have a scientific calculator for all papers. Graphical calculators and calculators that can do symbolic algebra, differentiation or integration are not allowed. All working must be shown, and the MF19 list of formulae and statistical tables is provided.
