Edexcel Further Mathematics (9FM0) Tutor in Saudi Arabia
- About Edexcel Further Mathematics
What is Edexcel Further Mathematics (9FM0)?
Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Further Mathematics (9FM0) is a linear A Level first taught from September 2017 and first certificated in 2019. Students sit four written papers in a single May/June series: two compulsory Core Pure papers plus two options, picked from Further Pure, Further Statistics, Further Mechanics and Decision Mathematics. No coursework counts towards the grade. Our lessons are online and strictly one to one, for families across Saudi Arabia.
The specification lists no prior learning or other requirements, yet Pearson adds that the students who gain most are likely to hold a Level 3 GCE in Mathematics. Papers build on all of GCSE Mathematics and on the AS and A Level Mathematics content, so we expect a student to be taking A Level Mathematics in parallel.
Advanced Mathematical Depth
The two compulsory Core Pure papers carry half of the grade and the two options carry a quarter each. We make Core Pure secure first, then give the remaining lessons to the two options the student is entered for.
Strong Preparation for Higher Study
Pearson names higher education, relevant employment and further training as the routes onward. The marks are weighted at 48–52% for standard techniques and at least 15% each for reasoning and problem solving, and our practice follows that balance, with extra time on proof.

Edexcel Further Mathematics (9FM0) Papers and Assessment
Four 90-minute papers, each worth a quarter of the grade.
Everything is examined in one year’s May/June series. Each paper lasts 1 hour 30 minutes, carries 75 marks, is worth 25% of the qualification, and every question must be answered.
- Paper 1, Core Pure Mathematics 1 (9FM0/01): compulsory
- Paper 2, Core Pure Mathematics 2 (9FM0/02): compulsory
- Two optional papers: Option 1 papers are coded 9FM0/3A–3D and Option 2 papers 9FM0/4A–4D
Either Core Pure paper can test any of the nine Core Pure topics. There are four option areas, Further Pure Mathematics, Further Statistics, Further Mechanics and Decision Mathematics, and each has a part 1 (an Option 1 paper) and a part 2 (an Option 2 paper). Students choose either any two Option 1 papers, or a matching Option 1 and Option 2 pair, which makes ten possible pairs. They may sit more than two options, and Pearson then grades the combination that gives the best grade. The grade runs from A* to E and comes from the combined mark, out of 300; grade thresholds may differ between routes.
Pearson designs the papers to be synoptic, so a question can pull together AS Mathematics and AS Further Mathematics knowledge. Overarching themes of argument and proof, problem solving and modelling apply to all content.
Calculators are allowed in all four papers. They must have an iterative function, matrix calculations up to at least 3 × 3, and summary statistics and probabilities for standard distributions. Calculators that offer symbolic algebra, symbolic calculus, translators, internet links or stored formulae and text are not allowed, though exam mode is accepted when switched on. Pearson provides the Mathematical Formulae and Statistical Tables booklet in the exam, but the formulae in specification Appendix 1 are not in it and must be learned.
Because the course builds on A Level Mathematics, see our Edexcel Mathematics (9MA0) tutoring, and our maths tutor in Saudi Arabia page explains how our lessons work for families here. Pearson separately offers International A Level Further Mathematics, which is assembled from six individual units, not four papers. Confirm with the school which one the student is registered for, UK 9FM0 or the International version.
Our Approach to Teaching Edexcel Further Mathematics (9FM0)
Our teaching approach is designed to make Edexcel Mathematics easier to understand, more manageable, and more results-focused for students in Saudi Arabia.
One-to-One Online Tutoring
Lessons are one to one and follow the school’s order. Core Pure is compulsory and makes up 50% of the qualification, and students then complete their two chosen option papers at their own pace. A free trial class is the place to name the topic that feels hardest.
Assignments & Detailed Feedback
Practice sets cover proof, complex numbers, matrices, differential equations and the option topics in Pearson’s style. Returned work shows where marks went on method, notation or presentation, with every mistake explained.
Mock Exams & Past Paper Practice
Past papers run to the real clock: 90 minutes for 75 marks, about 1.2 minutes per mark, one paper at a time. Afterwards we go through the marks question by question.
Topics Covered in Edexcel Further Mathematics (9FM0)
The 9FM0 specification gives nine Core Pure topics for Papers 1 and 2, then four option areas for Papers 3 and 4: Further Pure, Further Statistics, Further Mechanics and Decision Mathematics. We teach Core Pure and whichever options the student is entered for.

Further Pure and Decision Mathematics
- Further Pure 1: t-formulae, Taylor series, conics and the vector product
- Further Pure 2: groups, reduction formulae, eigenvalues and number theory
- Decision Mathematics 1: algorithms, spanning trees, shortest routes, critical path and linear programming

The code is 9FM0. Core Pure papers are 9FM0/01 and 9FM0/02, and the option papers are 9FM0/3A–3D and 9FM0/4A–4D. The smaller AS Further Mathematics qualification has its own code, 8FM0.
Through four written exams set and marked by Pearson. Each lasts 1 hour 30 minutes, has 75 marks and is 25% of the grade. Core Pure Mathematics 1 and 2 are taken by everyone, plus two optional papers, with the combined total of 300 marks graded A* to E.
Pearson offers eight option papers, two for each of Further Pure Mathematics, Further Statistics, Further Mechanics and Decision Mathematics. A student takes any two Option 1 papers or a matching Option 1 and Option 2 pair, which gives ten combinations. Ask the school which pair your child is entered for.
