What is Edexcel International GCSE Biology (4BI1)?
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology (4BI1) develops students' knowledge of living organisms, from cells, enzymes and nutrition to inheritance, ecology and the use of biological resources, together with experimental and investigative skills. It is a linear, untiered qualification: students sit two written papers in the same exam series at the end of the course, and grades range from 9 to 1. It is designed as a solid basis for progression to Pearson Edexcel AS and A Level or equivalent qualifications.

Pearson Edexcel Biology (4BI1) Practical Investigations
Experimental skills are assessed in the written papers
Pearson builds practical investigations into the 4BI1 content, and the experimental skills they develop are assessed through the two written papers. There is no separate practical exam. Experimental skills and the analysis and evaluation of data and methods (AO3) make up 19–21% of the qualification.
The practical investigations named in the specification include:
- testing food samples for glucose, starch, protein and fat
- how temperature and pH affect enzyme activity
- diffusion and osmosis in living and non-living systems
- photosynthesis: oxygen from a water plant, starch production and the need for light, carbon dioxide and chlorophyll
- the energy content of a food sample
- carbon dioxide and heat released by respiring seeds
- the effect of light on net gas exchange from a leaf, using hydrogen-carbonate indicator
- breathing in humans, including the release of carbon dioxide and the effect of exercise
- environmental factors and the rate of transpiration from a leafy shoot
- the conditions needed for seed germination
- population size, distribution and biodiversity using quadrats
- anaerobic respiration by yeast in different conditions
Students carry out their practical work at school.
