Pearson’s Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Biology B (9BI0) has been taught since September 2015, with first certificates issued in 2017. Its ten topics, from biological molecules through to ecosystems, are examined in three written papers, while practical work is reported separately on the certificate as the Science Practical Endorsement. Pearson says students likely to benefit most already hold a Level 2 qualification such as a GCSE in Additional Science or Biology. We tutor it online, one to one, for students across Saudi Arabia.
Topics 1 to 4 (molecules, cells, classification and transport) are examined in both Paper 1 and Paper 2, so they return again and again. Paper 1 adds energy, microbiology and modern genetics (topics 5 to 7), and Paper 2 adds genetic variation, control systems and ecosystems (topics 8 to 10). Experimental method is examined on paper. Paper 3, worth 40% of the grade and open to all ten topics, asks about the theory behind the 16 core practicals, while the practical work itself happens at school. Paper 1 examines topics 1 to 7, and Paper 2 examines topics 1 to 4 and 8 to 10. Paper 3 is open to all ten topics and adds synoptic questions linking two or more of them.
Papers 1 and 2 can include multiple-choice, short open, open-response, calculation and extended writing questions, but Paper 3 has no multiple-choice. At least 10% of all marks test mathematics at Level 2 or above.
Practical work is compulsory but sits outside the exams. Teachers at school assess the Science Practical Endorsement (9BI0/04) against Pearson’s Common Practical Assessment Criteria, and every student needs at least 12 practical activities. The result appears on the certificate beside the A* to E grade, not inside it. Pearson’s 16 core practicals include an enzyme-rate investigation, beetroot membrane permeability, a potometer, a respirometer and streak plating, and some exam questions are drawn from them. Practice papers are timed to match the real ones: 1 hour 45 minutes for Papers 1 and 2, then 2 hours 30 minutes for Paper 3. Paper 3 counts for 40% and can ask about any of the ten topics, so it gets extra attention, especially synoptic and experimental-method questions.

Pearson grades only the total mark, from A* to E, never individual papers, and reports the practical endorsement separately. Across the qualification, 31–33% of marks reward knowledge and understanding, 41–43% applying it, and 25–27% analysing, interpreting and evaluating.
