What is Edexcel A Level Chemistry (9CH0)?

Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Chemistry (9CH0) is a nineteen-topic course spanning physical, inorganic and organic chemistry, examined in three written papers. Pearson reports practical work separately, as the Science Practical Endorsement on the certificate. First teaching began in 2015 and the first certificates were issued in 2017. According to Pearson, students likely to benefit most already hold a Level 2 qualification such as GCSE Additional Science or Chemistry. We tutor it online, one to one, for students across Saudi Arabia.

Strong A Level Concept Support

Pearson splits the content across the papers: Paper 1 is inorganic and physical, Paper 2 is organic and physical, and Paper 3 can draw on everything. Some topics, such as bonding, redox and amount of substance, are examined in both of the first two papers, so we teach each idea once and then practise it in every exam style. Candidates use Pearson's Data Booklet in the exams, so we practise using its tables, not memorising them.

Theory and Practical Exam

Paper 3 carries 40% of the grade, can draw on any of the 19 topics, and asks about experimental methods based on the 16 core practicals. Exams are written only; the practical work itself takes place at school. In our lessons we teach planning, choice of apparatus, risk, significant figures, graphs and error analysis.

Edexcel Chemistry (9CH0) Papers and Assessment

Three written papers, plus a separately reported practical endorsement.

Pearson sets three written papers for 9CH0, all sat in May/June within a single year.

  • Paper 1 (9CH0/01), Advanced Inorganic and Physical Chemistry: 30% of the qualification, 90 marks, 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Paper 2 (9CH0/02), Advanced Organic and Physical Chemistry: 30% of the qualification, 90 marks, 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Paper 3 (9CH0/03), General and Practical Principles in Chemistry: 40% of the qualification, 120 marks, 2 hours 30 minutes

Topics 1 to 5, 8 and 10 to 15 feed Paper 1, while topics 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 16 to 19 feed Paper 2. Paper 3 is open to every topic and adds synoptic questions that link two or more of them.

Multiple-choice questions can appear in Papers 1 and 2 alongside short open, open-response, calculation and extended writing questions. Paper 3 has no multiple-choice. Pearson sets aside at least 20% of all marks for mathematics at Level 2 or above.

Practical work is compulsory yet separate from the exams. School teachers judge the Science Practical Endorsement (9CH0/04) using Pearson’s Common Practical Assessment Criteria. Each student must complete at least 12 practical activities, and the result sits on the certificate beside, not inside, the A* to E grade. Among the 16 core practicals are a titration, a redox titration, an enthalpy experiment and the preparation of aspirin, and some Paper 3 questions come from them. TutorDock teaches online and does not run lab practicals, so students do these in their school lab. We handle the written side: method, apparatus, risk, results tables, graphs and error analysis.

Younger students can start from our Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry (4CH1) page, and families in the Kingdom can read our A Level Chemistry tutor in Saudi Arabia page. Pearson also publishes a separate International Advanced Level in Chemistry, assessed in units under its own specification, so confirm which one your school enters.

Our Teaching Approach

One-to-One Online Tutoring

Lessons are one to one and follow the order your school teaches. Topics 1 to 5 (atoms, bonding, redox, inorganic patterns and amount of substance) come first because later topics use them, and the rest follow at the student's pace. Book a free trial class and tell us your hardest topic.

Assignments & Detailed Feedback

Work set includes calculations, mechanisms, data questions and extended answers. Feedback focuses on units, significant figures, balanced equations with state symbols and command words such as describe, explain and evaluate, and every mistake is explained.

Mock Exams & Past Paper Practice

Timed practice mirrors the real papers, from the 1 hour 45 minute Papers 1 and 2 to the 2 hour 30 minute Paper 3. Paper 3 is worth 40% and mixes organic, inorganic and physical topics, so it gets extra attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Edexcel A Level Chemistry (9CH0) is Pearson’s Level 3 Advanced GCE in Chemistry. It has nineteen topics, three externally examined papers sat in May/June of one year, and a separately reported Science Practical Endorsement.

The 19 topics run from Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table to Modern Analytical Techniques II. They cover physical chemistry (energetics, kinetics, equilibrium), inorganic chemistry (redox, Groups 1, 2 and 7, transition metals) and organic chemistry (hydrocarbons, carbonyls, arenes, nitrogen compounds and spectroscopy).

Yes. Pearson publishes a Data Booklet, and candidates use an unmarked copy of it in the examinations. It lists physical constants, infrared and NMR data, electronegativities and standard electrode potentials. In lessons we practise finding and applying this data.

Yes. We offer one-to-one online tutoring for students across Saudi Arabia, with support for theory, revision, practical understanding, and exam preparation.

Papers 1 and 2 are each worth 30% (1 hour 45 minutes, 90 marks) and Paper 3 is worth 40% (2 hours 30 minutes, 120 marks). The A* to E grade comes from the total mark, individual papers are not graded, and the practical endorsement is reported separately. By weighting, 31–33% of marks go to knowledge and understanding, 41–43% to applying it, and 25–27% to analysis, interpretation and evaluation.
