What is AQA GCSE Biology (8461)?

AQA GCSE Biology (8461) is the UK GCSE that takes students from cells and organisation through disease, photosynthesis and respiration to homeostasis, inheritance, evolution and ecology. It is a linear course: both written papers are sat at the end, in the same May/June series, at Foundation tier (8461F) or Higher tier (8461H). Our one-to-one online tutoring in Saudi Arabia follows the specification topic by topic and builds exam technique alongside the content.

Foundation Tier Support

Foundation tier papers lead to grades 1 to 5. Lessons give clear explanations, guided practice on structured questions and steady revision of all seven topics.

Higher Tier Support

Higher tier leads to grades 4 to 9, with an allowed grade 3 for a narrow miss. Extra time goes to Higher-only content such as monoclonal antibodies, negative feedback and the uses of plant hormones, and to interpreting data in unfamiliar contexts.

AQA GCSE Biology (8461) Required Practicals

Ten activities, assessed in the written exams

AQA sets ten required practical activities for GCSE Biology. There is no separate practical exam. Instead, the written papers include questions based on these activities, and those questions count for at least 15% of the overall marks.

The ten activities are:

  • using a light microscope to observe, draw and label plant and animal cells, with a magnification scale
  • the effect of antiseptics or antibiotics on bacterial growth, using agar plates and zones of inhibition
  • the effect of different salt or sugar concentrations on the mass of plant tissue
  • food tests for carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, including Benedict’s, iodine and Biuret reagents
  • the effect of pH on the rate of amylase activity, using iodine to test for starch
  • the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis, using pondweed
  • the effect of a chosen factor on human reaction time
  • the effect of light or gravity on the growth of newly germinated seedlings
  • measuring the population size of a common species in a habitat, using sampling
  • the effect of temperature on the rate of decay of fresh milk, measured by pH change

Students carry out these practicals in their school lab. In our online lessons we help them understand each method, identify the variables, record and process results, draw graphs and evaluate the findings, so they can answer written questions on practicals they have done or on ones they have not seen before.

Our Teaching Approach

One-to-One Online Tutoring

Lessons follow the 8461 specification in the order of the papers, Topics 1–4 and then Topics 5–7, at the tier each student is entered for. Structures and processes such as the heart, the reflex arc and the kidney are explained with labelled diagrams.

Assignments & Detailed Feedback

Assignments use the four question types AQA sets: multiple-choice, structured, closed short-answer and open-response. Students practise extended answers with a clear line of reasoning, and practical questions on tables, graphs and means. Feedback shows exactly where marks were lost.

Mock Exams & Past Paper Practice

Both papers are sat at the end of the course in one May/June series, so mock exams are timed as the real ones are: 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks per paper, each worth 50% of the grade. Scripts are reviewed against AQA mark schemes, with extra attention to extended answers and data questions.

Topics Covered

AQA GCSE Biology (8461) has seven content topics, split between the two exam papers, plus a section on key ideas:

Paper 1: Topics 1–4

  • Cell biology: cell structure, microscopy, cell division and transport in cells
  • Organisation: the digestive system, heart and blood, and plant tissues
  • Infection and response: communicable disease, vaccination and plant disease
  • Bioenergetics: photosynthesis and respiration

Paper 2: Topics 5–7

  • Homeostasis and response: the nervous system, hormones and blood glucose
  • Inheritance, variation and evolution: DNA, genetic crosses and genetic engineering
  • Evolution, fossils, extinction and the classification of living organisms
  • Ecology: communities, cycling of materials, biodiversity and food production

Assessed Across Both Papers

  • Core ideas tested in either paper, such as cell division and respiration
  • Key ideas in biology that underpin the assessment
  • Questions based on the ten required practicals
  • Working scientifically and maths skills

Frequently Asked Questions

It is AQA's GCSE in Biology, graded 9 to 1, where 9 is the top grade. The content covers seven topics, from cell biology to ecology, and all exam materials are in English.

It is a GCSE. The code 8461 belongs to AQA's UK GCSE Biology. OxfordAQA's international qualification is a separate course, International GCSE Biology (9201).

Not as a separate exam. Practical knowledge is tested inside the written papers, in questions based on the ten required practical activities, which AQA says are worth at least 15% of the overall marks. Students carry out the practicals at school. We help them online with methods, variables, results tables, graphs and evaluation.

There are two written papers, both sat at the end of the course in the same May/June series. Paper 1 covers Topics 1–4 and Paper 2 covers Topics 5–7. Each paper lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, is worth 100 marks and counts for 50% of the final grade.

Foundation papers award grades 1 to 5. Higher papers award grades 4 to 9, with an allowed grade 3 for students who just miss a 4. Both tiers share the same seven topics, but some content, such as monoclonal antibodies and negative feedback, is Higher tier only.
