What is Cambridge O Level Mathematics (4024)?
Cambridge O Level Mathematics (Syllabus D), code 4024, is a two-paper maths qualification at the same level as Cambridge IGCSE. It has no tiers, so every student studies the full syllabus and can achieve grades A* to E. Half the marks come from a non-calculator paper, so fluency with written calculation and exact methods is important.

One Syllabus, No Tiers
Unlike IGCSE Core and Extended, 4024 has no tiers. Every candidate takes the same two papers and is eligible for grades A* to E, so lessons cover the full syllabus with clear explanations and regular practice.
Two Papers, Two Hours Each
Paper 1 (no calculator) and Paper 2 (calculator) are each 2 hours, 100 marks and 50% of the grade. We practise them separately in one-to-one online lessons, with mistake correction after each paper.

- Question types: both papers have structured and unstructured questions and are externally assessed.
- No tiers: every candidate takes both papers and can achieve A* to E.
- Assessment objectives: AO1, “Knowledge and understanding of mathematical techniques”, is 40–50%. AO2, “Analyse, interpret and communicate mathematically”, is 50–60%. So more than half the marks reward problem-solving and explanation, not just method.
- Exam series: June and November.
- Guided learning hours: about 130.
- Private candidates: private candidates can enter.
4024 and the move to IGCSE from 2029
Cambridge is moving schools in administrative zones 3 and 5 from selected O Levels to Cambridge IGCSE in phases. Schools in Saudi Arabia are in zone 3. For schools in zones 3 and 5:
- O Level Mathematics D (4024): for first assessment in June 2029, Cambridge says schools switch their entry to Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580).
- O Level Additional Mathematics (4037): this moves earlier, to IGCSE Additional Mathematics (0606) for first assessment in June 2028.
- 4024 availability: Cambridge’s 4024 syllabus page says it is available in zones 3, 4 and 5 in 2026, 2027 and 2028, and in zone 4 only from 2029. Cambridge says it will continue to run O Levels in zone 4.
- Grades: IGCSE is graded A* to G, against A* to E at O Level. Cambridge describes the two as “directly comparable Level 2 qualifications”.
What it means for your child: in zones 3 and 5, exams taken before June 2029 are still 4024; students due to sit from June 2029 will normally be entered for 0580. Cambridge’s 2028–2030 syllabus for 4024 says there are “no significant changes which affect teaching”. Unlike 4024, 0580 is tiered (Core or Extended), and its papers and topic list are not identical. Your school will confirm which syllabus your child is entered for, and we plan lessons around the syllabus your child will actually sit.

Both qualifications provide a foundation for further study. 4024 suits students who are comfortable working through the full syllabus without a tier choice. Where students lose marks in 4024
- Paper 1 arithmetic. Fractions, negative numbers, standard form and surds must be quick and accurate without a calculator.
- Not showing working. Cambridge says that where working is asked for, students cannot get full marks without it, “even if their final answer is correct”.
- Rounding. Non-exact answers need 3 significant figures unless the question says otherwise. Keep more figures in the working and round at the end.
- Mixed forms. An answer should not combine a fraction and a decimal.
- Exact values. Where a question asks for an exact value, the answer may need to be in terms of π or in surd form.
- Graphs. Plotted points must be within half of the smallest square, straight lines ruled and curves smooth. Sketches need labelled axes and key points.
- Calculator handling on Paper 2. Enter 2 hours 30 minutes as 2.5 hours, and read 4.8 as $4.80 in money questions.
- Unfamiliar wording. AO2 is 50–60% of the marks, so practise multi-step and worded problems, not only routine questions.

Paper 1 practice: two quick examples
- Estimation: estimate (3.87 × 41.2) ÷ 0.198 by rounding each number to 1 significant figure: 4 × 40 ÷ 0.2 = 800.
- Surds: √50 + √18 = 5√2 + 3√2 = 8√2.

A study plan for 4024
Two-year course
- Year 1: number, algebra and graphs, coordinate geometry, geometry and mensuration, with a short non-calculator practice in every lesson.
- Year 2: trigonometry, vectors and transformations, probability and statistics; then timed Paper 1 and Paper 2 practice from the spring term.
Final 10 weeks
- Weeks 1–2: a diagnostic paper and an error log.
- Weeks 3–6: repair the weakest topics.
- Weeks 7–10: one timed paper a week, alternating Paper 1 and Paper 2, with full corrections.
