What is Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry (4CH1)?

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry (4CH1) takes students from particles, atomic structure and bonding through moles, metals and acids to energetics, reaction rates, equilibria and organic chemistry. Pearson describes the assessment as untiered written examinations accessible to students of all abilities. The course is linear, so both papers are sat together in one exam series at the end, and results are reported on the 9 to 1 scale. Pearson intends it as a solid basis for moving on to Pearson Edexcel AS and A Level or equivalent courses.

Untiered Chemistry Support

Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry (4CH1) is an untiered qualification, so all students study the same syllabus and sit the same papers, with support adjusted to their level and target grade.

Exam-Focused Online Tutoring

We teach the core content and the bold 'C' statements, which go deeper into some sub-topics and are assessed only in Paper 2C. Examples include bond energy calculations, dynamic equilibrium, electrolysis half-equations, and alcohols, carboxylic acids and esters.

Pearson Edexcel Chemistry (4CH1) Practical Investigations

Practical skills are tested in the written papers

The 4CH1 specification builds practical investigations into the chemistry content, and the experimental skills students develop through them are assessed in the two written papers. There is no separate practical exam. Experimental skills, together with the analysis and evaluation of data and methods (AO3), account for 19–21% of the qualification.

The practical investigations named in the specification are:

  • the solubility of a solid in water at a specific temperature
  • paper chromatography using inks or food colourings
  • finding the formula of a metal oxide by combustion or by reduction
  • the electrolysis of aqueous solutions
  • the approximate percentage of oxygen in air, using a metal or a non-metal
  • reactions of dilute hydrochloric and sulfuric acids with metals such as magnesium, zinc and iron
  • preparing pure, dry hydrated copper(II) sulfate crystals from copper(II) oxide
  • preparing a pure, dry sample of lead(II) sulfate
  • temperature changes when salts dissolve and in neutralisation, displacement and combustion reactions
  • how surface area and acid concentration affect the rate of reaction between marble chips and hydrochloric acid
  • how different solids catalyse the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide
  • preparing an ester such as ethyl ethanoate

Students do this practical work at school. In our online lessons we go through the methods, help them identify independent, dependent and control variables, record and process results, plot and read graphs, and judge reliability, accuracy and validity, all of which can be tested in Paper 1C and Paper 2C.

Our Teaching Approach

One-to-One Online Tutoring

Lessons work through the 4CH1 topics in order, with step-by-step mole and concentration calculations, balanced equations with state symbols, and clear dot-and-cross, structural and displayed formulae.

Assignments & Detailed Feedback

Practice sets use the four question types Pearson sets in both papers: multiple-choice, short-answer, calculation and extended open-response. Our feedback picks up unbalanced equations, missing units, weak explanations of trends and incomplete method descriptions.

Mock Exams & Past Paper Practice

Mock exams copy the real timings: 2 hours for the 110-mark Paper 1C and 1 hour 15 minutes for the 70-mark Paper 2C, the paper that adds the bold 'C' content. Scripts are checked against Pearson mark schemes, with extra work on calculations, practical-context questions and longer answers.

Topics Covered

The 4CH1 specification is divided into four topics, from the principles of chemistry to organic chemistry:

Principles of Chemistry

  • States of matter and mixtures, including separation techniques and chromatography
  • Atomic structure and the Periodic Table
  • Chemical formulae, equations and mole calculations
  • Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, and electrolysis

Inorganic Chemistry

  • Group 1 (alkali metals) and Group 7 (halogens)
  • Gases in the atmosphere and the reactivity series
  • Extraction and uses of metals, including alloys
  • Acids, alkalis, titrations, salt preparation and chemical tests

Physical & Organic Chemistry

  • Physical chemistry: energetics, rates of reaction, and reversible reactions and equilibria
  • Organic chemistry: naming organic compounds, crude oil and fuels
  • Alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, carboxylic acids and esters
  • Synthetic polymers: addition polymers and polyesters

Frequently Asked Questions

It is Pearson's International GCSE (9–1) in Chemistry, code 4CH1. The content is split into principles of chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and organic chemistry, and it prepares students for AS and A Level chemistry or equivalent courses. Exams and all student work are in English only.

No. There is one route for everyone: the same content and the same two papers, written so that students of every ability can access the questions. Results are given as grades 9 to 1, and 9 is the top grade.

No. Pearson places practical investigations, such as chromatography, electrolysis, salt preparation and rates of reaction, inside the specification and tests the skills through written questions. Students carry out the practicals at school. We help them online with planning, variables, results tables, graphs and evaluating methods.

Yes. We offer one-to-one online tutoring for students across Saudi Arabia, with support for theory, calculations, revision, and exam preparation.

There are two papers, both set and marked by Pearson and both sat in the same series. Paper 1C (2 hours, 110 marks, 61.1%) tests only the content that is not in bold. Paper 2C (1 hour 15 minutes, 70 marks, 38.9%) can test everything, bold 'C' statements included. The 180 marks are added without scaling. Exams are held in June and November, and calculators are allowed.
