What is Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620)?

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620) develops students' understanding of chemical principles, practical problem-solving and the scientific method. The syllabus covers 12 topics, from states of matter, bonding and the mole to electrochemistry, metals, organic chemistry and chemical analysis. Students who achieve grades A* to C are well prepared for courses such as Cambridge International AS & A Level Chemistry.

Core Level Support

This route is for students working at the Core level. They sit Paper 1 (Multiple Choice), Paper 3 (Theory) and Paper 5 or 6, with grades C to G available. We build confidence with chemical formulae, word and symbol equations, and reacting masses in simple proportions.

Extended Level Support

This route adds the Supplement content for students aiming at grade C or above. They sit Paper 2 (Multiple Choice), Paper 4 (Theory) and Paper 5 or 6, with grades A* to G available. We give extra time to mole calculations, titration data, empirical formulae, percentage yield and ionic half-equations.

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620) Practical & Experimental Skills

Experimental skills make up 20% of the 0620 qualification.

Chemistry is an experimental subject, and Cambridge assesses practical skills in a separate paper worth 20%. Each candidate sits either Paper 5, a 1 hour 15 minute Practical Test, or Paper 6, a 1 hour written Alternative to Practical. Both are marked out of 40 and examine AO3, experimental skills and investigations.

The syllabus lists chemistry contexts that practical questions may draw on, including:

  • measuring volumes of gases and solutions, masses, temperatures and times
  • rates of reaction and temperature changes during reactions
  • salt preparation and titrations
  • filtration, crystallisation, simple and fractional distillation, and chromatography
  • electrolysis
  • identification of metal ions, non-metal ions and gases
  • chemical tests for water, and tests for oxidising and reducing agents
  • test-tube reactions of dilute acids, including ethanoic acid
  • displacement reactions of metals and halogens
  • heating and cooling curves, solubility, and melting and boiling points
  • conditions under which iron rusts or other metals corrode

Students carry out their practical work at school. Our online lessons help them understand experimental methods, record and process results, plot and interpret graphs, spot anomalous results and sources of error, and evaluate methods, which are the skills tested in Paper 5 and Paper 6.

Our Teaching Approach

One-to-One Online Tutoring

Lessons follow the 0620 syllabus at the student's level, Core or Extended. We focus on particle and bonding ideas, balanced equations with state symbols, step-by-step calculations and correct chemical terminology.

Assignments & Detailed Feedback

Homework mixes multiple-choice items with short-answer and structured questions on calculations, qualitative analysis and experimental data. Feedback focuses on correct equations and units, clear working and applying chemistry to unfamiliar situations.

Mock Exams & Past Paper Practice

Timed past papers match the student's entry: Paper 1 or 2 (45 minutes), Paper 3 or 4 (1 hour 15 minutes) and the chosen practical paper. Students also learn to use the Notes for use in qualitative analysis, which Cambridge provides in both Paper 5 and Paper 6.

Topics Covered

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620) is organised into 12 syllabus topics:

Frequently Asked Questions

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620) is an international Chemistry qualification with 12 syllabus topics, from states of matter, bonding and stoichiometry to metals, organic chemistry and chemical analysis. It develops data handling, practical problem-solving and the scientific method, and gives a solid foundation for AS & A Level Chemistry.

In Paper 5, candidates carry out experiments in a laboratory. Paper 6 is a written paper with no experiments in the exam, but it tests the same AO3 skills and the same experimental contexts. Students do their practical work at school, and our online lessons help them understand the methods, results, graphs and evaluation needed for either paper.

Core covers the Core subject content only and leads to grades C to G, through Papers 1 and 3 plus Paper 5 or Paper 6. Extended adds the Supplement content, such as mole calculations and ionic half-equations, and leads to grades A* to G through Papers 2 and 4 plus Paper 5 or Paper 6. Cambridge recommends Extended for students expected to achieve grade C or above.

Yes. We offer one-to-one online tutoring for students across Saudi Arabia, with support for topic learning, calculations, practical understanding, revision, and exam preparation.

Every candidate sits three papers: a 45-minute multiple-choice paper of 40 questions (30%), a 1 hour 15 minute theory paper of 80 marks (50%), and Paper 5 or Paper 6, each 40 marks (20%). Cambridge offers 0620 exams in the June and November series, with a March series for schools in India.
