Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610) Practical & Experimental Skills

Practical skills are assessed through a dedicated practical component.

Cambridge IGCSE Biology places a strong emphasis on practical and experimental skills. All candidates take one practical component: Paper 5 Practical Test or Paper 6 Alternative to Practical. Both assess experimental skills and contribute 20% of the qualification.

Students should be familiar with experimental contexts such as:

  • diffusion and osmosis
  • food tests
  • enzyme-catalysed reactions
  • pH and indicators
  • photosynthesis and limiting factors
  • transpiration
  • heart rate and breathing rate
  • respiration
  • tropic responses
  • germination
  • continuous and discontinuous variation
  • observation and dissection of seeds and flowers
  • biological specimens, measurements and sampling
  • tables, graphs, conclusions, anomalies and evaluation of experimental methods

Our tutoring helps students connect practical methods with the biological principles behind the results and prepare for both the Practical Test and Alternative to Practical routes.

Our Teaching Approach
